New NFL Head Coaches for the 2009 Season
September 7th 2009 - Special K

We have 9 new NFL head coaches starting the 2009 season.  7 of the new head coaches are rookies.  Breakdown of 2009 NFL Coaching Carousel:

Rookie Head Coaches:
St. Louis Rams - Steve Spagnola (former NY Giants Defensive Coordinator)
Kansas City Chiefs - Todd Haley (former Offensive Coordinator Arizona Cardinals)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Raheem Morris (was TB Defensive Backs Coach)
Denver Broncos - Josh McDaniels (former New England Offensive Coordinator)
Detroit Lions - Jim Schwartz (former Tennessee Defensive Coordinator)
Indianapolis Colts - Jim Caldwell (was Indy Quarterbacks Coach)
NY Jets - Rex Ryan (former Baltimore Defensive Coordinator)

Former Head Coaches:
Seattle Seahawks - Jim Mora (former Atlanta Head Coach)
Cleveland Browns - Eric Mangini (former NY Jets Head Coach)

How have new NFL head coaches fared historically in their first week on the job?
Over the last 2 years, only 3 out of 9 new head coaches have won their opening games SU and ATS. These 3 head coaches were Mike Smith (Falcons), Mike Tomlin (Steelers), and John Harbaugh (Ravens).  Mike Tomlin was the only coach to actually win on the road against the Cleveland Browns.  Last season, Mike Smith's Falcons beat the winless Lions and Jim Harbaugh won against the Bengals, two teams completely on the decline.

What can we take from this experience in looking at this year's Week 1 matchups?

  • Jim Caldwell and Jim Mora have the best chances of winning their matchups.  Both teams are playing at home against inferior teams.  Jim Caldwell is also very familiar with the players and staff which make for an easy transition.

  • Eric Mangini has a home game as well but against a team that is hungry to prove that they are Super Bowl bound and against a QB who probably wants to beat his former coach. Prediction: LOSS
  • Prediction: Other than Jim Caldwell, the other 6 head coaches will need to wait until week 2 to try and win their first game
